Fictional Mothers

So tomorrow is Mother’s Day in Ireland and I thought I would talk about some of the great mothers that are in fiction.

    Molly Weasley from Harry Potter
Mrs. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice
Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones
Catelyn Stark from Game of Thrones
Eleanor Young from Crazy Rich Asians

That is all I can think of. I know I am probably missing out on loads. Let me know who I am missing.

I do want to wish every mother a very Happy Mother’s Day. I do hope you have a great day.

The Perfect Poison by Amanda Quick

Plagued by rumors that she poisoned her fiancé, Lucinda Bromley manages to live on the fringes of polite society, tending her beloved plants- and occasionally consulting in a murder investigation. For the notorious botanist possesses a unique talent: she can detect almost any type of poison, especially ones that have their origin in the botanical kingdom. But the death of a lord has shaken Lucinda to her core. At the murder scene, she picks up traces of a poison containing a very rare species of fern. So rare, in fact, that only one specimen exists in all of England- and it was stolen from her conservatory just last month. To keep her name out of the investigation and to find the murder, Lucinda hires a fellow Arcade Society member. Caleb Jones runs a psychical investigation agency. A descendant of the founder of the Society, he is very good at protecting its secrets- and frighteningly good at getting at the truth. Immediately, Lucinda senses both a raw power and undeniable intensity in the imposing man. But as a nearly overwhelming desire blooms between Caleb and Lucinda, they are drawn into the dark heart of a deadly conspiracy that can be traced to the early days of the Arcade Society – and to a legacy of madness that could plunge Caleb into the depths of his own tortured soul?

I really enjoyed reading this. Amanda Quick is an amazing writer and I loved reading this. It is an excellent story and Lucinda and Caleb are amazing characters. They have such a great chemistry, it’s hard not to want to know more. It is so easy to read. It would be perfect for holiday reading or for a lazy day. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

Letters From a Stranger by Barbara Taylor Bradford

When award winning film maker Justine Nolan returns to her beautiful childhood home, she is intrigued by an envelope she finds in her absent mother’s post. But the letter inside contains a shocking revelation. If genuine, it will change everything she believes about her family’s recent history.

So this is the first book I’ve read by Barbara Taylor Bradford and I am in two minds about it. On the one hand, it is an enjoyable book, which is easy to read. On the other hand, the characters are very one dimensional. They were a tad too good. Every human Being has a flaw of some kind and yet the people in this one don’t. Plus something was supposed to happen at the end and it was very anti climatic. Like it took about a page and a half, maybe less and then it was suddenly over. We kept hearing about it throughout the entire book and it was like really that’s it?? Where’s the explosion? Having said that,it is an enjoyable book. You want to know what happens. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

Book in Real Life

A guy in asked a very serious question in work the other day.

If I could one book to be real, what would I choose?

I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. And in typical bookworm fashion, I’ve come up with a few ideas.

Harry Potter, for me, is one that goes without saying. I mean it has so much in it. Magic, friendship and a dragon. What more could you want?

Another one that goes without saying is Jane Eyre. I mean come on. Romance, a young woman knowing her worth, hell there’s a madwoman in the attic. It’s totally worth being in the ‘real world’.

I think another one for me would be the world of Harry Dresden. I don’t know what is about him, but he’s my guy.

The Wheel of Time, I think, is another interesting world that I would love to be real.

As would Narnia, I mean who wouldn’t love to meet Aslan.

The last one I think would the world of Tolkien. Again one that has so much to it. Hell there’s even a dragon.

I could go on, but I think if I do we will be here all night.

What about you? What world would you love to be real? Let me in the comments.

I Robot by Isaac Asimov

Earth is ruled by master machines but the Three Laws of Robotics have been designed to ensure humans maintain the upper hand: 1) a robot may not injure a human being or allow a human being to come to harm 2) a robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law 3) a robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. But what happens when a rouge robot’s idea for society contravenes the Three Laws?

So this has been on my list for a while and I finally got round to reading it. I am so I did. It is a very enjoyable book. I have to admit that, for me, it can be very science-y. Having said that, Isaac Asimov makes the characters very relatable. Even the robots are great. Although it’s very interesting that Asimov doesn’t describe the robots. So it’s left to the imagination, which is kinda cool. I totally understand why this is a classic. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

Meet Me At Beachcomber Bay by Jill Mansell

Love is in the air in St. Carys, but you’d never know it- the people of this seaside town are very good at keeping secrets.. The man Clemency loves belongs to someone else. She has to hide her true feelings- but when she ropes in an unsuspecting friend to help, wires start to get crossed. For the first time in Ronan’s life his charm has failed him in winning over the woman he wants. Loving her from afar appears to be his only option. Belle seems to have the perfect boyfriend, but something isn’t quite right. And now a long buried secret is slowly rising to the surface. The truth has a funny way of revealing itself, and when it does St. Carys will be a very different place indeed..

You know I haven’t read any Jill Mansell in a while and I’ve forgotten how good she is. She has such an easy way of writing and you can’t help but want to know what happens next. This is no different. I did think Belle was a bit of a brat. She was the only one in the book I was bit indifferent towards. Apart from that, it is an excellent book. I love reading anything by Mansell and I hope you enjoy as much as I did. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

Logen Ninefngers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he’s in the verge of becoming a dead barbarian- leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, dashing officer and paragon of selfishness, has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules. Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses mar lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it. Enter the wizard, Bayz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he’s about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal and Glokta a whole lot more difficult. Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood.

I have to admit I may struggled with this a little. It is an interesting book, but I thought there might have been a little too many characters for a first book. I do think it’s a good book but for some reason it didn’t grip as much as I would like. Joe Abercrombie is a good writer and I do see why people would like him but it didn’t do it for me. I do think it’s one that’s worth reading, even if I didn’t enjoy it. I would recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

With This Ring by Amanda Quick

Leo Drake, the ‘Mad Monk of Monkcreast’, is notoriously eccentric and unquestionable reclusive. But he is also a noted antiquity expert, which is why Beatrice Poole has demanded his reluctant assistance. The freethinking authoress of ‘horrid novels’, Beatrice is searching for the Forbidden Rings of Aphrodite, a mystic treasure she suspects played a role in her uncles death. Beatrice finds Leo every bit as fascinating as one of the heroes in her novels and she’s convinced he’s the only one who can help her. But after five minutes in her company, Leo is sure he’s never meet a woman more infuriating… and more likely to rescue him from boredom. Yet the alliance may well prove the biggest mistake of their lives. For a villain lurks in London, waiting for the pair to unearth the Forbidden Rings – knowing that when they do that will be their last …

I so love this book. I don’t know what it is about Amanda Quick but I love her work. This is no exception. It is well written, the characters are amazing and I love the story. There is so much to it. Mystery, romance with a trace amount of history. I love it. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and spend time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family home happens to look like a palace, that she’ll ride in more private planes, than cars, and that with one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, The It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick’s formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should – and should not- marry.

So this has been making the rounds recently and I can totally see why. It is a really good book. I did find the footnotes to be a little strange, as was the ending. But I still enjoyed reading it. I’m not sure why but I thought of it as a bit of a guilty pleasure. Everything in seemed so decadent and, if you’ll excuse the pun, rich. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it.
